Our Mission
UCAN has already achieved remarkable success during our formative first year, 2024. We contracted for and installed nine Flock Security ALPR cameras to augment the existing 3-camera system already in place on Hillcrest and Eucalyptus Roads. One of those original cameras became redundant so we now have a robust 11-camera network that covers every entry and exit point from our neighborhood, to help police track stolen vehicles and those used in crimes or sought during Amber Alerts, serving as both a deterrent and a tool for law enforcement to solve criminal cases. Our network is now connected to the Berkeley Police Department, augmenting the city's own 52 ALPR cameras installed around Berkeley, and supplementing the 289 operated by the city of Oakland.
UCAN also organized a kickoff Block Party and our first annual Holiday Gathering in Round Park. UCAN has also assumed the duties of overseeing our long-running July 4th parade and celebration, a neighborhood institution since 1961. Most importantly, we brought our neighborhood together in a new spirit of community connection and cooperation, making friends out of neighbors. We look forward to more events and improving our emergency preparedness and public spaces, among other long term goals.
